What do I think about foreigner girls travelling alone?
admin March 30th, 2007
“Yes, I travel alone. No boyfriend, no family and I am single”.
The Indian lady aged around 30-40 years answered me.
I was surprised from her answer because normally I saw only western girls travel alone and I think that is so cool but this time I talk with an Indian lady and she told me “my family does not push me to marry because we live in America”. That’s why she has very modern ideas.
The answer comes in the afternoon when this lady comes to have lunch and I go to take the order from her (as I was a captain in the restaurant in a 5 start Bangkok hotel) .
She said “I have no problem to travel alone and I don’t want to marry because I can stay alone and I am happy to do it”.
That answer surprised me even more because as everybody knows, in India when the lady has age to be married, her family will search the man for her, because this is their culture. “Wooow”, I was thinking with myself “This Lady is very strong!”.
I worked for 3 year in the Hotel and I live in the Pratunam area, where is full of foreigners who come shopping (if you know this area, full of shopping malls for cloths and near Phantip Plaza, the computer Mall in Bangkok) and I used to see many travelers come and go from when I was young till now.
Many foreigner girls travel alone or with the family or with a group or with the boyfriend, so that make me always think how strong they are.
Why I think like that: because in my family they always teach me to be quiet lady as don’t know too much, don’t ask too much and you must know and learn to cook, iron, clean and study. When you graduate so go to work and take care of the family and marry and have baby and buy a house, a car……more and more…. this is like obligatory cycle for me and some of my friends.
A new idea coming a lot when I have chance to working in the hotel, I meet many people from many country and they have many ideas. I have changed my mind and sometime when I saw a foreigner girl travel I was envious because it like you have a lot of freedom to do the things that you love and more than anything they are strong. Heart and soul and a heavy bag on her back that make me think “yes, women can do more thing not just only house work and have baby”. We can do things together with have baby and enjoy our life as life is short… and i want to be like that.
Not everybody is lucky to have a chance to travel but I have it. Some of my friends think I am crazy because we like to have a safe life and here in Thailand if you have age more than 25 years it is very rare to get a job if you leave your job. That’s why we like to keep our job, work and work, then when we getting old we travel or we married then we travel with family.
This is the difference between Asian girls and Foreigner girls.
As some Asian girls look sad and fear to ask things, maybe it is not polite to ask and maybe someone says “stupid”, but foreigner ask for understanding and not fear to ask thing because they think it is the right thing to do. That is a confident thing they have but for me I am an Asian girl sometimes I still shame to ask things because I fear to hear:
“you are stupid!” , because I always hear it from my family.
So, I think that it is right that not only men enjoy their lives traveling, but also girls can do it if they have faith in their selves!
Have a nice day!

Unfortunatly life is always a balance or a compromise.
In that specific case, the balance is between the culture you have to live in and interior growth you want to achieve. Fortunatly culture changes and broad-minded people like you will be everyday more appreciated. In Italy we have experienced the same you have described, expecially in the south of Italy, where culture with regards to the women was very “closed”. But now things are changing. All the experiences you are bearing in your mind, will let you see the world in a different way… and “enlightened” people will recognize in you the special person I believe you are.
Good luck!
Luca

Dear Lek,
you know Buddha taught to leave negative states of mind, one of the most strong is fear.
I hope to have your courage, because it is also difficult to find a job in italy if you are 42!
But I don’t want to be slave of my fear all my life.
take care
Ugo
